Jessica Hemley

Jessica Hemley is an American-born soprano who is currently based in Bristol. She teaches singing to students of all ages and genre from her studio in Cotham and at the Centre for Voice in Southville. Before relocating to the UK in 2011, she held contracts with Opera New Jersey (Die Fledermaus, Carmen) and International Opera Theater Philadelphia (Troy Herion’s Il Racconto d’Inverno, American première). She also performed as a soloist in recital, sacred music and oratorio throughout the New York metropolitan area and maintained a private teaching studio of forty pupils. Jessica earned degrees in voice performance from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ (B.M. summa cum laudae) and the USC Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles (M.M. with distinction), studying singing with Sharon Sweet and Cynthia Munzer. Whilst at conservatoire, she portrayed the roles of Amy (Little Women), Noémie (Cendrillon), Lady with the Hand Mirror (Postcard from Morocco), and Juliet (Romeo and Juliet) in the world première of Lee Hoiby’s setting of the opera.


Further operatic roles have included Gilda (Rigoletto), Musetta (La Bohème), Giulietta (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Elvira (I puritani), Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier), Frasquita (Carmen), Blonde (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Mme Herz (Der Schauspiel Direktor) and the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor.

Jessica has had the opportunity to work with many esteemed coaches and directors, including J.J. Penna, Dalton Baldwin and Ken Cazan. She has participated as a young artist in the Florence Voice Seminar, the International Vocal Institute and the Tyrolean Opera Program.


Engagements in 2012 include débuts with Bristol Opera (Malwina in Der Vampyr, Marzelline cover in Fidelio), Bath Opera (Frasquita in Carmen) and Co-Opera Co (Tytania in A Midsummer Night’s Dreamdirected by Peter Watson). In 2013 she will appear at Colston hall in the inaugural concert of Ensemble Gallique, at St George’s with the Westerly Showband (Bess in a conert version of Porgy and Bess), and in a series of concerts throughout the UK and Europe with the newly-formed Turner Choir, a chamber choir of which she is a founding member and manager. Jessica is an occasional student at the Wales International Academy of Voice for the 2012-2013 season and studies singing with internationally-renowned soprano Nelly Miricioiu.
